Furniture at the scale of a monument
Very few of Le Corbusier's Chandigarh designs were made at monumental proportions. The Bureau des Ministres is the exception: made exclusively for the ministerial palace, in a highly limited edition, at a size that answers to the room rather than the person.
A two-part removable top leaves an open corner, carried on three legs. Beneath it a central unit holds two compartments. The arithmetic is plain and the result is imposing: essentialist simplicity doing the work that ornament would do anywhere else.
